Stereotyping has many negative outcomes. Did you know that young children, from about 5-6 yrs old, have the psychological development to experience stereotype threat? As with adults, stereotype threat impairs their performance in areas related to the stereotype and can have lifelong cumulative effects. The strength of the impact for children and adults seems to depend on the density of cues. Many of us have some experience with this and can tell stories about the negative impact on our own lives! How can we consciously work to reduce the stereotype cues in our schools, businesses, media and society as a whole?
